PROGRAMMING
GAME WORKSHOPS
The Reacting pedagogy is best understood by experiencing as students do, albeit in abbreviated versions. This game workshop provides a condensed gameplay experience over two days, broad context for the simulation and mechanics, and include post-game guidance on how to use it in your own classroom.
Participants will be sent a gamebook for each game, outlining the topics and debates of a historical moment, as well as a detailed role sheets for a historical actor in those debates. Participants prepare and engage as that historical actor, making arguments and forging alliances to achieve specific Victory Objectives. You need not be a specialist to play (or run) a Reacting game, but you should plan on doing some preparatory reading.
We are pleased to offer nine different games this year, including:
- Engines of Mischief: Technology, Rebellion, and the Industrial Revolution in England, 1817-1818.
- Rousseau, Burke, and the Revolution in France, 1791
- Bacon's Rebellion: Race, Class, and Frontier Conflict in Colonial Virginia, 1676
- Game of Sages: Philosophy, Politics, and Diplomacy in China, 223 BCE
- Climate Change in Copenhagen, 2009
- Cigarette Century
- Do We Take Shelter? Evaluating “High Stakes” Information
- The Jumonville Incident: Washington at Fort Necessity
- The North Korean Hunger Games: Famine, Rogue Regimes and the Ethics of Aid, 1995-1998
The first five games in the list above are full-length games, which will play out over four sessions at the conference. You'll choose one of these five to play on Thursday and Friday. The latter four are short games, which will play out over two sessions on Saturday and Sunday. Veterans should choose one of these, and we suggest that newcomers opt for our "Newbie Workshop" in lieu of a short game, the better to prepare you to GM your own first game.
WORKING GROUPS
Building on the work we began last year, Working Groups will develop over three sessions, and are aimed at creating resources through collaboration that is uniquely possible at a face-to-face event. Currently, we know there will be WGs on "Syllabus Creation" and "DEI & Accessibility," with others in process. We'll ask that you choose one to attend and contribute to over the course of the conference. If you're interested in leading a working group (perhaps on Reacting for Language Learning, Adapting Reacting for Online Use, or another hot topic), please reach out to Jenn Worth at jworth@barnard.edu.
CONCURRENT SESSIONS
We're bringing concurrent sessions back! This year, we'll be offering a short list of topics, facilitated by Consortium Board members. Each one is stand-alone, and you'll be able to attend two over the course of the conference. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

FUNDED REGISTRATION FOR DEI ADVANCEMENT $0

HOUSING
This year, we have approximately 100 residence hall rooms available in Sulzberger Tower for our conference participants; 85 singles can be booked at a rate of $100/night; and 14 double rooms at a rate of $65/night. Basic linens will be provided. Reservations are available only for the nights of June 5-8, and all participants must be checked out by 2pm on June 9.

COVID POLICY
We strongly encourage, but do not require, masking. However, to ensure safety for the wider campus community, all summer participants are requested to meet Barnard College’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement, which means that they are fully vaccinated and boosted.
